Subject Expertise:
Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Physics Mechanics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Multivariable Calculus, Medicine
About Me:
Hi, my name is Benjamin Huang and I have been tutoring since I was in high school with some classmates who had learning disabilities. From there I began to see that learning was best done when integrating concepts. I have been some excellent results once memorization is no longer prioritized and true understanding is the focus.
Education & Relevant Training:
- BS in Biochemistry with Honors (synthesis of a fluorescent cladribine analogue) – University of California, San Diego
- DO in progress – Touro University Nevada
Experience:
- Biology tutoring for students with learning disabilities
- Organic chemistry tutoring (under my mentorship two of them also won a $7,500 grant to do chemistry research)
Teaching Philosophy:
Aiming for memorization creates learning debt as learning tools like flash cards or spaced repetition allow for minimal retention. This creates a situation where increased workload is not manageable with more studying. My approach is to help students be cognizant of their own brain’s effort to create a meaningful network of concepts rather than memorization.
Hobbies and Interests:
- I like to golf, cook, and lift weights
Future Goals:
I’d like to finish my medical degree and practice as a private practice joint replacement surgeon. Furthermore, I am interested in continuing research on clinical outcomes after surgery in the outpatient setting where return to function and reduced burden on the patient is a growing focus as our population ages.
